The Scarlet Letter

Hi,
I wanted to read this book long ago. Thinking that it would be beneficient for my English studies I bought it... I was so happy when it arrived... and What a surprise!! I can't understand it... Well, I am exaggerating... I understand parts, but it has those words "thou" and "thee" and so on... I don't know if it is appropriated to learn them... and then, there are grammar constructions that I don't know if they are still in practice or they are mistakes nowadays, like this one:
"The first time was three or four years since, when I favored the reader-inexcusably, and for no earthly reason that either the indulgent reader or the intrusive author could imagine.. "

This paragraph is in the first page... and I don't understand why "since" goes at the end... Is it an exception of "since"?
Could you please give your advice?
Thanks a lot!
Irma.

In modern English we would say "The first time was three or four years ago"
