The sand at/on/in the beach

which is correct???

I am trying to say, "the sand at the beach was like powdered sugar."

Also

Should I use "the sands" or "the sand"?

To a large extent whether you say "at" or "on" depends on your proximity to the beach. " I don't know of any general rule that governs this usage. My guess is that it's just convention.

To a large extent whether you say "at" or "on" depends on your proximity to the beach. If you are near the beach you would be more likely to say "on the beach" if you are some distance from the beach you would be more likely to say "at the beach." I don't know of any general rule that governs this usage. My guess is that it's just convention.

In this context you would not say "sands."
