The same as / like

Which pattern (#1 or # 2) is more common?

1. He is the same liar as his brother.
2. He is a liar, like his brother.

1. He is the same idiot as his brother.
2. He is an idiot, like his bother.

Hi, I suppose the first variant is rather ungrammatical because in my opinion "same as" must be followed by a person (or an object) itself, but not by any of person's characteristics. e. "he is the same idiot as his brother" means for me that he and his brother are the same person (it's likely from some exciting movie scenario).

I suppose the first variant is rather ungrammatical because in
my opinion "same as" must be followed by a person (or an object)
