The rust

Hello, I have one more question (and then I am hopefully done with this topic of the article!).

He walked up to a car and examined the rust on its sides.

I am using the definite article before 'rust' because in my view the description 'on its sides' makes that rust definite. It's like saying: '...examined the rust [that was] on its sides'. Did I get that right?
