The rules

Hello!

When I put my question to the forum, there are some rules which I observe. But I also want to dig a little and learn more about the rules if I want someone to answer my question.

For example I try to send mature posts. Because if I use emoticons such as smiley :-) in my postings, native speakers or non-natives who read my qustion may interpret my posts as too casual. I also don't type in all upper case for fear that it implies I am shouting. Most of the time I'm doing my best to use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation in my post refraining from using incomplete sentences.

I am acutely aware that I am too late to ask this question, but could you please do me a favour and tell me what I should think about when I am asking a question to you or forming an opinion?

PS I have got to work on having the patience to wait for a couple of hours for my postings to be responded.

BAYRAM ERDEM I am acutely aware that I am too late to ask this question, but could you please do me a favour and tell me what I should think about when I am asking a question to you or forming an opinion? I think that what you are doing already is quite admirable, if you are following those self-conceived rules. I particularly like the one about avoiding emoticons, because I think that they are very counterproductive to the language learning process.

  • Recently, one member commented that 'Mr Micawber is never humorous because he never uses smilies'.
  • I actually joke quite a lot, but learners—and native speakers—too easily become dependent on emoticon messages and then cannot properly interpret the language!

In my humble opinion, your writings are serious, but not without the occasional touch of humour.
