The context is you go to a friend house, who is a non social person having deep thoughts, mostly silent, he is sad because his wife died. When you go to his house you see that his room is not very bright, etc. How does a such a person will keep his room? Describing it.

"Dull" is very good, but it is rather poetic. We normally use "dim" for light. The room was dimly lit, or the room was dim. "Dark" is good, too, but that can mean no light at all. He sits in a dark/darkened room.
