"the rock of our family" ?

firstly , i'm very thankful to Avangi & Clive, two of the most dynamic & selfless members, i think ,in this forum. I have posted 2 questions and both of them have been replied by them immediately and thoughtfully.

today , i have 2 other questions and i need English-forums's members to help me again.
1, Jane is my mother.She is the "rock of our family."
2,Marie Curie ,whose discover of radium made her famous ,was a French physicist.
what does "rock of our family " mean in the first sentence , and where is the mistake in the second sentence?

2. "Discover" is a verb. This sentence needs the noun, "discovery."
