I am always confused with purality when it comes to possession.

" They ordered the staff and customers to put their hands behind their heads."

Why do we use pural when referring to the staff and customers' heads? It looks to me that we are suggesting each of them has more than one head.

Do people have more than one head apiece? Do people have heads? Use your common sense and allow your readers to exercise theirs.
