the road

We've cut the number of cars on the road/roads by half, but the sky is still hazy.

1. Is the above correct?
2. Which choice is correct?
Thanks.

New2grammar We've cut the number of cars on the road/roads by half, but the sky is still hazy. I'm inclined to say "road" but I think a case could be made for either formulation.

Both are correct. on the road is the more abstract idea, roughly equivalent to operating or travelling or in use.
