The right word for reading
I was engaed in a discussion over the translation of two concepts in an article, "reading for marks" and "reading for knowledge". in the original language both were expresed in a single word, and I would like the same, or at least something in the form of "mark reading" as oppsed to "reading for marks". Can anyone come up with a good expressions that would satisfy those meanings?

the author actually used two words that are not normally associated with such meanings, and decided to give them (implicitly) such definitions.
the words were literally "reading word for word", with no implication of understanding or the alike, for "reading for grades"
and what would normally translate into "read" for "reading for knowledge"
my idea was using "read" for the former, and "study" for the latter, but others think "read" strongly suggest understanding and thus unsuitable. another person used "recite" and "read", but i thought it has a rather strong suggestion towards performing.
so, are there better words for those meanings?

I don't think I can come up with anything better than what you've already given; I think they're self-explanatory (even though we use "grades" instead of "marks" in the U.S.).

well, informally, studying/reading just to pass an exam is called 'swotting' or 'swotting up' over here.
If it is specifically for one exam or test you could also use 'revise' or 'revision' - this is reviewing what you have studied in order to maximise your marks.
