The result is OR result are

Hi, I would like to ask a number question.

If we have a sentence like - Science and technology have improved over the years and the result is the appliances we use in everyday life. Where is the number concord? With the subject or object? Shall I use is or are?

Or the sentence- Next group of people are the young.... ? are or is?

thank you

The concord is always with the subject: the result is . If it sound awkward (as I agree it sometimes does), then recast: and the appliances we use are the result. The decision with 'group of people' is another matter.

  • The concord is always with the subject: the result is .
  • If it sound awkward (as I agree it sometimes does), then recast: and the appliances we use are the result.
  • The decision with 'group of people' is another matter.
  • Although the grammatical subject is ' group ' (singular), notional and proximal concord often lead us to ' people are '.
  • This is OK.
