(the) rest / (the) nature

The peculiarity of man as compared with rest of nature lies not only in the power and character of his desires

Why wasn't used "THE" before rest, nature and character?

I got when it wasn't used before man because "man" refers to race and not to a specified man.

I consider the omission of the before rest a mistake. The power and character of his desires flows smoothly off the tongue as it is and the omission of the before character gives the impression that the speaker regards the two as one entity. CB
