The reason why or for

The reason___ being late for the meeting was __ his little son fell ill this morning.
A. for that B. why, that C. for because D. why , because
Yes, I know in relative clause, we always use the reason + why (relative adv). In the above sentence, do we have to use the reason why ..... that or we can use for here. For me, For is better. or can we use "The reasonwhy she was late for the meeting......

Hi, bizgiant. Sorry, I blew it. A is right, not C.

C suffers from the same problem as B: 'reason..because' and 'reason...why' are both considered poor style by some, even though they are commonly heard. 'Reason...that' is preferred.
