The reason + why

Hi,

I know why they came late.

I know the reason why they came late.

I know the reason they came late.

I know the reason of them coming late.

I know the reason of their coming late.

My actual question is do we need "why" after the "reason" generally? Can we write them without "why" in the given examples?

Thanks..

My actual question is do we need "why" after the "reason" generally? -- No. I recall that California Jim produced an exception, but I cannot remember what it was.

But your sentences are not all possible:

I know why they came late.

I know (the reason) why they came late.
