The real danger was/were

Hello Helpers,

Should I use the singular or plural in the sentence

"The real danger was/were the anti-China forces behind the scenes"

My non-native ear says plural, but I really don´t know the rules. Your help is appreciated!

The real danger was the anti-China forces behind the scenes. -- The rule is that the singular subject 'danger' should be in agreement with a singular verb ('was'). If the plural 'forces' bothers you, then recast the sentence: The real danger was the array of anti-China forces behind the scenes.
