The Puritans

Could you please check the following sentence?

Sometimes I really like to put on colourful clothes as hippies do and sometimes I only wear as plain and simple as it is possible as if being the Puritans.

The last part of your sentence is confusing. I would put the sentence in parallel form. For instance: Sometimes I put on clothes as colourful as those worn by hippies, and sometimes I wear clothes as plain and simple as those worn by the Puritans.
