Hi

I was reading Wikipedia article on PBS. I need your help. What does the phrase "354 member TV stations" mean? Are these those TV station which buy their programs from PBS. I take CNN and BBC as two TV stations. Thanks for the help.

ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and BBC are "networks."

The "stations" are "broadcasters." That used to mean that they sent out "radio waves" from a huge antenna. Now some of them are "cable" only.

Thank you, CJ, Avangi.

So, the TV stations are primarily concerned with transmitting the signal while the network decides which programs to transmit from which station.

I have one more question. CNN stands for Cable News Network. Does this mean CNN doesn't use TV stations to distribute its programing because it is a "cable" network? Please help me with it. Thanks.

I suspect PBS in particular uses the phrase "member stations" because they rely on "membership" -- people who have made dontations to keep their non-profit broadcasting station alive.

When you are solicited by them, they ask you to "become a member" -- anyone can list or watch, but they are member-supported.

Hmmm, the government seems to be a member.

Don't mix up the Corporate for Public Broadcasting, which is government funded (for now - it was supposed to be axed entirely), with the local member stations. They get only a tiny fraction of their funding from government sources.

Hi, Barb.

Do the member donations go to the member stations or to the networks?

These days I donate only to the Salvation Army. They have the best record of passing the funds through.

(In my youth I once donated to the ACLU, and got flooded with solicitations from gay and lesbian organizations.)
