The proper use of 'That'

I would like to know what the correct application of the word 'that' is. For example in the following sentence:

We confirm our client is aware that time is of the essence and we therefore request your response as soon as possible.

Or should it read: We confirm our client is aware, time is of the essence and we therefore request your response as soon as possible.
