The pronouciation of 'says'

Hello,

I have been surveying my friends and family, scoured the internet and consulted the dictionary to no solid response. When one prounces the word "says", is it pronounced like "prays", or is the correct RP way supposed to be "sez", like fez!?

It is my belief that "sez" soudns really common and slangy/lazy, and that 'says' is teh 'proper' way, but i am not sure.

Thanks,

In the UK, it's usually a regional thing. People from some parts of the country say "sez" and people from other parts say "says", like "prays". I'd guess that "sez" is more common overall.

  • It is very definitely not true that "sez" is "slangy/lazy".
  • It's the standard English pronunciation for many of us.
