The present continuous is better as you said. However, why the simple present is also possible? Can we say that the present simple is wrong here because that is an action in progress not a repeated action?
I wouldn't say that "waits for" is definitely wrong here. However, it is noticeably less usual -- and I guess you could say less natural -- than the continuous. The original "awaits" seems less unusual though.
