the principles they illustrate

Hi teachers,

Does "they" refer to "the principles" or "the people who draw examples of the principles to teach?

Here we discuss the skills of structuring arguments and of grounding opinions in objectively available evidence for students working in the social sciences. The examples we give, however are drawn from sociology because that is the subject we teach and know best, but the principles they illustrate are applicable throughout the social sciences.

Here's my interpretation of the structure.

Here we discuss the skills

Hi CalifJim,

Thanks for breaking it down in the smallest possible way for me, and the meaning of the sentences too.

Have a great day.
