1) The price of houses soared during the summer and we sold ours at a large profit.
2) The price of houses soared during the summer and we sold ours for a large profit.
I suspect that the first one simply states the financial result of this transaction, while the second one suggests that they sold the house in order to earn money.
There is no difference in meaning.

The singular is OK.
