The President expressed sympathy/his sympathy for those

The President expressed sympathy/his sympathy for those killed in the accident.

"His sympathy" sounds better in the above to me, but I think I may be wrong. Your advice? Thanks.

Either will work. 'His' personalizes it somewhat, I suppose, but on the other hand, 'expressed sympathy' is a more fixed phrase.
