The present tense or the present progressive

a. Despite the fact that a large number of books and magazines are being published, we spend fewer and fewer hours on reading every year.

Which sounds more natural to native speakers? And, could you explain why, if you please?

No difference to me. However, just to keep construction parallel, I might change the second verb in a) to we are spending... [ Others will disagree, I'm sure.
