the present tense in the past-tense scenario?

1. I noticed that my american friends tend to switch to the present tense when they are talking about something that happened in the past. Why? Is it used very often?

2. Is in the first place the same as at first?

3. different than = different from?

The use of the present tense when telling something in the past tense makes the story much more lively. It's some kind of trick... I'd say it's the same as "first"; "at first" could be rephrased as "at the beginning".

  • The correct preposition is "from", but I gathered "than" is often used.
