The preposition "of"

What is the technical reason that we can say either "What flavor ice cream do you like?" or "What flavor OF ice cream do you like?" but we have to say "What size shirt do you wear?" and never "What size OF shirt do you wear?"

You can say all 4 of those, but the ones without 'of' are the natural ones.
