The prefix in the word "paralanguage"

we are asked to do a little presentation of some termonology in Speech Communication.

According to Cambridge Online Dictionary, there are 2 meaning for the prefix "para":

1. beyond

2. similiar

Which definition is pertinent to the word "paralanguage"? Also if anyone can give a more complete definition or examples for the word "paralanguage" than that found on TheFreeDictionary.com I would really love to hear them.

Thanks in advance

I would say "beyond", though there is no reason to reject "similar" completely. Have you tried Googling? org/wiki/Paralanguage CJ
