The position of an adverbial phrase.

1. For John, the new year brought disaster.
2. The new year brought disaster for John.

I'd like to know if I can rephrase #1 as #2.

In addition to the above answer by cool Breeze, there can be a subtle difference between the two.
#1 could be interpreted as "From John's viewpoint, the new year brought disaster."
