1-- Right. Assume = take to be the case or to be true.
2-- You are right.
3-- Your teacher is right.
4-- I think that both words would work here, but A is the popular word today. Contamination is more associated with the destruction of pure substances.

I choose C for this sentence but really I don't understand its meaning. Often courses require simpler courses as prerequisites. This course has no prerequisites. It doesn't require you to know anything at all. To assume is to take something as understood.

2. His parents’ hostile attitude ___ him to leave home.
A.Drove; B.made; C.urged; D. suggested;
I choose A but my teacher chose C. You're right; your teacher's wrong. The subject of the sentence is attitude, not parents. Only people can urge (except in poetry)

3. Which book would you __ me to read?
A.Suggest; B.say; C.rather; D.advise;
I choose A but my teacher chose D Your teacher is right. "Suggest" does not take an indirect object . "Advise" does.

4. The __ of the air by toxic gases is one of the major problems of this century.
A.Pollution; B.damage; C.contamination; D.dust;
I choose A but I don't know what is the difference between pollution and contamination I would choose C. I'm really not sure about this one. We usually speak of contamination of A by B. We sometimes speak of pollution as existing all by itself. I think people are often careless and use them interchangeably. I think we'd say "polluted with," not "polluted by." I think polution would be called polution wherever it might be found.
But substance A would be considered a contaminant if found in substance B, and would be okay if found in substance C. (Sorry, this isn't very clear.) The air is a mixture of many things, many of them toxic in large doses. But as in all things which humans consume, a certain amount of contamination is tolerated and allowable.
