The "pollution" or "contamination" of the air?

Please check my answers to the exercise following:

I choose C for this sentence but really I don't understand its meaning.

2. His parents’ hostile attitude ___ him to leave home.
A.Drove; B.made; C.urged; D. suggested;
I choose A but my teacher chose C.

3. Which book would you ___ me to read?
A.Suggest; B.say; C.rather; D.advise;
I choose A but my teacher chose D

4. The ___ of the air by toxic gases is one of the major problems of this century.
A.Pollution; B.damage; C.contamination; D.dust;
I choose A but I don't know what is the difference between pollution and contamination

1-- Right. Assume = take to be the case or to be true.
2-- You are right.
3-- Your teacher is right.
4-- I think that both words would work here, but A is the popular word today. Contamination is more associated with the destruction of pure substances.
