the point that we (depend vs depend on)

I have met a phenomenon that is very curious to me. Would you take a look at the sentence below?

We may judge it by taking our nature as a starting point, and then the position that we defend as traditional will seem exaggerated.

The 'on' is not behind the verb 'depend'. Since I have memorised it so mechenically as I believe 'depend on' shoud be one word, it is little bit a surprise to me.

Could I put 'on' there? Is it optional or obligatory to omitt 'on'?

Many thanks in advance.Emotion: bow

Unless you are quoting incorrectly, there is no "depend" in the sentence. The word is "defend" and thus does not need "on." Correct?

You are right. I don't know why I have read the 'defend' as 'depend' incautiously.
I think I happened to interpret it totally otherswise.
