the player's desire to play his match...

StartFragment>StartFragment>

"They are analyzed through a qualitative research method. The subjects of this research are male Taekwondo players of Korean Gas Corporation who have reduced more than 5kg of weight. The first finding from the results is that the motive for reducing weight lies in the player's desire to play his match under better conditions."

I'm wondering about the appropriate use of singular/plural form (ie. players' vs. player's), and also use of 'the'.

I've used 'the' to indicate that it's one of the male Taekwondo players of Korean Gas Corporation who have reduced more than 5kg of weight. But at a level deeper, 'the' could be used to pick out out a single player from that group. So with the intention that I wanted to do this, should/can I use 'a' instead, assuming the reader can pick up that fact that even though it's 'a', judging from the context of the text he read so far, that it's one of the Taekwondo players?

The singular is called for here because you have used the pronoun 'his'. Don't worry about 'the'; it is fine-- there is no deeper level.

Thanks for the reply. Would you normally use the singular form for player in that (kind of) sentence? (not regarding the 'his'; it can be changed to 'theirs', as appropriate).

The choice is entirely optional, but once made, it must be adhered to-- you have to maintain consistent number as far as possible in a given passage. So choose the one that works best in context. I myself like the singular, so I usually start with that; but after composition, the practicalities of revision may require me to go to the plural form instead.

Hi guys,

Taekwondo players

Where I live, we'd normally speak of Taekwondo competitors .
