The plane zoomed low overhead and we couldn't hear anything.

Hello,

could you please explain what the sentence below mean?

The plane zoomed low overhead and we couldn't hear anything.

Does it say that this plane has just taken off or it is just flying?

Top answer

There is nothing to suggest it has just taken off. The fact that it is low does not imply anything about where it is coming from nor where it is going. 'Zooming' as the first verb is simply stating that the plane is moving very fast.

I see. In my program that I use to learn English there are pairs of sentences: English sentence - Polish translation. And in this case the translation says something like:
The plane has just taken off and flew over (near) our heads and we couldn't hear anything.
I started googling the word zoom and cannot find such a meaning, which made me suspicious about correctness of this

ReegisI started googling the word zoom
"has just zoomed off" would be closer to "has just taken off".

An interesting concept. When I started to learn English I thought that phrasal verbs look structured, then I started thinking that they are created rather random, and now I am gradually getting back to the original thinking
