Hiller’s research into the cultural implications of dream analysis in her writings, as well as her artwork, can usefully extend Freud’s approach into the field of art. She categorises artists’ dream images into three categories: ‘the illustrative or descriptive, which picture or illustrate dream imagery of a more or less conventional kind, the documentary or artefactual, which attempt to achieve a kind of accurate reportage; and the evocative, which are meant to trigger off an experience similar to a dream’. These modes of picturing give us insight about the place of dreams in specific historical eras.

The way artists represent dreams in their work is likely dictated by the conception of dreaming prevalent in their era. Hiller has created categories for three different approaches that artists take when representing dreams. If we look at the art of an era that has to do with dreams and sort it into her categories, we might find that one or two of those categories preponderate. We can use this as an indicator of how people thought about their dreams in that era. Some cultures even today think that dreams are the real world, and our waking life is the dream, for example.
