The piercing awareness of being about to die

Hello everybody.

She doesn’t know that when I was a freshman who managed to get the second highest grade point average in class, 'I had a total *** freak-out in the girls’bathroom, couldn’t breathe, a crushing in my chest, pierced by an awareness that I was about to die', and ended up in the school shrink’s office.

I don't know if I got the point.

The writer is trying to say that in the bathroom, she was attacked by someone, they hit her on her chest and she was about to die', isn't she?

I really appreciate you for your help.

  • The passage doesn't clarify, though other parts of the text may do so, whether she panicked because she did so well or because she did so poorly (in her own mind) as to get only the second place rather than the first.
  • The cause of her panic was probably the latter.
