What difference is there between "the phone number of" and "the phone number for"?

I think I always use for, especially for places in general, although of would not be wrong:

What's the phone number for [the police / the library / the nearest pizza place / ...] ?
For a specific person, I would not use of, but the possessive:
<>What's [your /his / John's / Mrs. Sanger's / your brother's] phone number?
