'the past tense' vs 'the past perfect tense'

I have posted similar questions so far, however I still feel difficulty in understanding enough the difference between the past tense and the past perfect tense. Could you tell me which one is right between (A) and (B) of the following sentence 1~4 so that I can better understand their difference with more examples? Thank you.

1. I [ (A) lived / (B) had lived ] in China for 3 years when you were a child.
2. I [ (A) lived / (B) had lived ] in China for 3 years when your parents got divorced.
3. I [ (A) lived / (B) had lived ] in China for 3 years since 2010 when I met you.
4. I [ (A) lived / (B) had lived ] in China for 3 years when the second world war broke out.
