The past tense or the past perfect

(a) As I heard that the museum was worth a visit, so I thought I would go there the following month.

(b) As I had heard that the museum was worth a visit, so I thought I would go there the following month.

Are both (a) and (b) correct and natural?

Use either "as" or "so" in your sentences. I would omit "as" and just use "so."
Otherwise, both sentences are OK.
