The Past Simple or The Present Perfect?

At a party;
-Hi, James.
-Hi, Lucy.
-Have you met/did you meet someone interesting today?
-Yes, there is Pawel, a very funny guy from Poland, and there is Joanna, a very beautiful girl from Russia.

In the same day evening;
-James, have you met/did you meet someone intresting today?
-Yes, mum, I (have) met Pawel, a very funny guy from Poland, and Joanna, a very beautiful girl from Russia.
