The past perfect tense v.s. the simple past tense

Hello everyone. I have a question.

Regarding the two items in the bracket in the sentence below:

By the age of 30, Jose [lived / had lived ] in six different countries.

I think the past perfect tense is better in terms of grammar, but I think that the simple past tense is still acceptable. What do you think?
