The past perfect tense correct?

Hi. Would you say the past perfect use as shown below is correct? Is a past perfect tense with the phrase "over past years" correct?

John Doe is one of the poorest people in the neighborhood. He had received our help over past years. Now, he is making changes and things are getting better.

Top answer

Anonymous He had received our help over past years Based on the above, I would say past perfect continuous is more appropriate as this process went on for quite sometime. However, it didn't meet the basic requirement for past perfect which is two events taking place in the past with one preceding the other.
