Question about using the past perfect or the present perfect:
(1) The town hall is badly in need of refurbishment. Yesterday the district planning officer called in an architect who had already designed some important buildings.
(2) The town hall is badly in need of refurbishment. Yesterday the district planning officer called in an architect who has already designed some important buildings.
While it might be argued that the past perfect ‘had already designed’ (1) should be used because it is the ‘more past’ action than the ‘calling in’ action. However, I personally feel that (2) is more appropriate since ‘has already designed’ refers to the ‘personal experience’ of the architect himself, and there is no correlation with the ‘calling in’ action.
Can some learned friends shed some light on this please?
Many thanks.
