The opposite meaning of "pay"

Hi,

Done with the dinner, Tom walked to the counter and paid the bill.

Regarding this sentence, what is the corresponding vocabulary for the cashier's action? Charged the bill?

I'd like to know the idiomatic expressions for the cashier's action; what I gathered from my reference books are of the customer's action.

Thanks. Emotion: smile
