Vocabulary

the one place/man

Hi,

"We are going to the one place in town where many people gather on weekend nights."

"That's the one man in the world who can do it."

When you read these sentences, do you imagine there can be other places/men like these ones? It seems to me that "the one place/man" means "the only one place/man" though it doesn't say "only."

Thanks,
Rino

Thank you, Clive.

How about these sentences?

1) "She is the one he trusts."
2) "She is the one he knows he can count on."
3) "She is the one who truly understands him."

The don't have a phrase like "in town" or "in the world."
Does it change the meaning of "the one"?

In contexts like that, yes.
