The Old Man's Comforts

I was reading a poem from Robert Southey and don't quite understand what
"Let the cause thy attention engage" and "He hath not forgotten my age"means.
I wonder if there's anyone who can help...^^ Thank you...

I am cheerful, young man, Father William replied,

Let the cause thy attention engage;

In the days of my youth I remember’d my God!

And He hath not forgotten my age.
