The number of the unemployed is rising steadily.

Hi

Michael Swan suggests "the" be dropped after "unemployed" in this sentence.

The number of unemployed is rising steadily.

I want to know how this sentence would sound to native speakers if I used "the". Redundant? Wrong?

The number of the unemployed is rising steadily.

Thanks,

Tom
