the number of days in school?

Hi,

I am just wonder if the way i say the following statement is grammatically correct?

Today is the 40th day in school? or today is the 40th day of school?

Is it okay to say," If yesterday was the first 39th day of school, what number is today?" Is this question correct?

Also, is there any difference when people ask me what day is today and what date is today?

How would I phrase the question if I want to know today is Tuesday, Nov 4, 2012?

Thanks,
