The number (of)

"The number of passengers missing now equals the number rescued 100."

I saw the sentence and I was wondering if "the number of rescued 100" is more correct or "of" can be omitted and both mean the same. If so, "The number of passengers missing" also can be rewritten to "The number passengers missing" for the same meaning? What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much in advance.
