The number of

Hi,
I'm confused. I read the questions about using "A number" or "The number" but I did not find my answer.

"As the number of members of each learning group gradually increases, the group can become an independent one"
(This is in an essay that independent group is a special kind of a group that is defind there).
Is it correct? (Is it right?)
Is "the" needed or not? using "of" two times does not make in a bad sentence?

Is it ok to write "gradually increase" or we have to use the adverb after verb and say "incereases gradually"?

Regards, Mansooreh
