The number 18

Hi Emotion: smile

we write these following numbers :
16 sixteen ( six + teen )

17 seventeen ( seven + teen ) and so on
BUT
18 eighteen ( eight + een ) or ( eigh + teen ) not eight + teen =eightteen
my question is why there is a (T) DELETED in 18 .

bedour why there is a (T) DELETED in 18 . Just to make it more difficult to learn English! Seriously, there is no reason.

  • Seriously, there is no reason.
  • I suppose that at some time in history it was thought unnecessary to write two T's in that word, and ever since then only one T has been used.
  • The same thing occurs with the "th" ending: six, seven, eight; sixth, seventh, eighth CJ
