The noun 'influence'

'Influence' which means person exercising power can be used as both countable and uncountable? Concise Oxford Dictionary (1983) says life denotes 'vivifying influence' in the life of the party. That seems to be used as uncountable because it has no determiner. If not, an article is omitted in the dictionary? i.e., 'a' vivifying influence.
